One of the most common questions I receive is on my editing. Here is another before + after for those who expressed interest! <3 The photo listed as “sooc” is straight out of my camera with absolutely no editing whatsoever. The other photo is my final edit. As you can see, I keep it simple. A bit of a crop, maybe a straighten, and slight adjustments in Adobe Camera Raw. The only things I do in Photoshop are sharpening (because I think most photos shared on the web could use sharpening), using the patch tool and/or the healing brush to remove unwanted objects or blemishes, and re-size.

For a simple, timeless edit, I have found that the trick (though it’s not really a trick) is to get it right in-camera…or as close to what you’re going for as possible. I always shoot in manual (another question I am frequently asked) and I use custom K white balance. I love shooting during “the magic hour” (for me, the last 2 hours before the sun goes down) and find that if it works for the look I am trying to achieve, the light during this time requires far less editing, particularly when shooting for lens flare and haze.

I hope that you enjoyed this little look at some of my images straight from the camera! If there is a specific image you’d like to see SOOC, just message me on Facebook or email me! I’m always happy to share before + afters as long as you want me to. Thank you all for your questions! Keep em coming!

I think I’m going to make a habit of re-photographing the details of my own wedding every year on our anniversary (or round thereabouts). Saturday (the 11th of May) was our very first wedding anniversary. Here are some of the details from my wedding, as well as some gorgeous flowers. I carried orchids at my wedding, but if done again, I love these peonies and heirloom garden roses. Pretty much anything with the word “heirloom” in it is lovely to me!

On our anniversary, Thom and I went to see “The Great Gatsby.” I’ve been looking forward to that film for what seems like over a year. It’s one of my favorite books of all time. So this last frame is Gatsby film inspired. Added a little dust and scratch damage to “age” the photo using Alien Skin. Free trial for 15 days. Not my usual, but fun.

xoxo,

Love me some iPhoneography! I’ve been using my two favorite camera apps for iPhone, Instagram and Hipstamatic since 2010. There have been many other camera apps on the market since then, but none I am more excited about than PicTapGo. It has become my go-to app for the many photos I need to take of my cats every day (hehe!) and the random lovelies I see when out and about. The iPhone has a decent little camera function and it’s an excellent and fun way to document your life. I LOVE scrolling through my 3,000+ Instagram photos to re-live the past 3 years of my life in little square pictures!

When it comes to being able to edit iPhone photos with filters, but still stay true to your regular artistic style, PicTapGo is best for me. I believe in simple, minimal editing that emphasizes beautiful light. I think it’s great that there is a camera app that doesn’t go overboard with the filters, so you can achieve lovely snapshots.

PicTapGo is incredibly simple and easy to use. I love their clothesline-inspired layout and easy to understand options. My only desire is that they add a “delete” button so I can erase the embarassing selfies I take of myself in the morning when I look like Charlize Theron from the movie “Monster.” Don’t want that getting out there!

My personal favorite filters (which I save as recipes) are: Lights On, High Fives, Get Faded Natural, and Skinny Jeans. My favorite of their options for b/w is Old Skool. Great app, so check it out and try it today! Here are a few of my favorites from the past month. I tend to share them on Instagram and would love to see yours, so please tag me if you try it! On Instagram I am @theashleynoelle.

A few happenings around the house. I seriously have the best husband. I love spending time with him, no matter what we’re doing, but it was especially awesome this past weekend because we went to JB Knacker in Gilbert, IA and did a little vintage/junk shopping. It was so fun! We scored some great stuff, including pretty vintage mirrors and a gorgeous chair that our cats have evidently claimed as their territory. Makes a great backdrop for some still life portraits, too. : ) Enjoy your week, friends!

It has taken me 3 years and more angst than I’d like to tell you about, but a pretty wonderful thing has started to happen. People have started recognizing my work as mine just by looking at it. I’m humbled, amazed, and I’m taking this as a sign that I have finally discovered my personal style. Just like Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, I realized that my style (as a photographer/artist) has always been within me, and when I went looking for it, I didn’t have to look any further than my own back yard.

Authenticity and originality has always been really important to me. It sounds funny, but honestly, when I stopped wanting to be Clayton Austin, I started wanting and loving to be me. That’s when I became an artist.

Here are some images I took yesterday, intended to be for my “oh! my darlin” gift card promotion, but have since become quite popular as fine art prints. These are definitely representative of my personal signature style. Lovely. Simple. Everyday objects, but captured in a way that evokes nostalgia. I’m also a little bit proud that I took these indoors during the evening hours with only natural light. I also captured amazing rainbow lens flare INDOORS this week. Honestly, this week has been stellar. Full of artistic discovery, advancement, and gracefully dealing with awkward situations. : ) I hope your week as been wonderful, too.

This is an older one I created when I discovered “Ashleyness” and switched to operating under my own name. It was the first thing that came to mind. Inspired by my childhood game of making daisy chains and arranging pressed flowers into patterns and letters.

And this is the indoor rainbow lens flare. : ) Kinda neat!

Love + Rockets,
